Now...fast forward a few years to the now, 2009. The reflecting pool is full again, Mo has tripled in size, K is now the size Mo was in '03, and C is now K's old size. Got it? Good. On to the monuments.

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial

As you can see, we were blessed with a beautiful day, albeit a little hot. Here is the Jefferson Memorial from across the Tidal Basin.

If you do a 180-degree turn from the picture above, this is the view you get. From here, and compared to the Washington Monument, the White House looks strikingly small.

The Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial

The FDR Memorial is tucked away from the National Mall and is as tranquil as they come. It contains numerous waterfalls and is broken up into four outdoor "rooms" representing each of the four terms he served.


Because of the amount of rain we have gotten this summer, the Tidal Basin was a little high. Compare the picture above on the right (notice the Jefferson Memorial) to the picture below which was taken from the same staircase 5 years earlier in 2004. Also, notice the 1st Grader taking the wet route after her mom had just tight-roped the wall to stay dry.

The waterfalls. If you start from the below right photo and work left and then from right to left above, you will notice the waterfalls become more complex. This is to represent the growing complexity of FDR's tenure throughout his 12 years.

The District of Columbia World War I Memorial

This memorial is the only memorial to WWI in DC. However, it is not a national memorial but one memorializing DC veterans. It is little known and even less traveled even though it is right off the path of the reflecting pool along the National Mall.


Dedicated in 1931, "The World War" would not need clarification as World War I for nearly another decade.

The World War II Memorial

If Lincoln is #1, this one is #2 and making a strong push for the top spot.




The Field of Stars contains 4,000 stars representing the 400,000 killed during the war.

The Blair House, the official guest house of the White House. It is here that Nancy Reagan stayed in 2004 after the state funeral of President Reagan and the steps where an assassination attempt on President Truman was thwarted by a White House policeman.
